How to Keep Your Garage Warm This Winter
Last article we discussed how you can stay toasty in this chilly weather. But what about that space between stepping out of car and into your warm home? Does it have to be as unbearable as the outside? Not at all! Your garage doesn’t have to feel like you were walking into a giant freezer. At Eid-Co Homes, we build our houses to be cozy sanctuaries, but we know the garage is often the "final frontier" when it comes to winter comfort.
Whether you use your garage as a home gym, a DIY workshop, or just a place to keep your car snow-free, you don’t have to settle for the shivering! Here are our favorite practical ways to turn that chilly space into a warm and usable part of your home this winter.
Insulate That Big "Wall"
The garage door is usually the biggest culprit for heat loss. Since it’s often just a thin sheet of metal, it’s basically an invitation for the North Pole to move in.
- The DIY Fix: You can buy garage door insulation kits at most hardware stores. They are lightweight, easy to install, and can make a massive difference in temperature regulation.
- The Result: It keeps the warmth in and the "arctic blast" out!
Seal the Gaps
Even a perfectly insulated door won't help if the wind is whistling through the edges.
- Check the Bottom Seal: That rubber strip at the bottom of the door (the threshold) can crack or flatten over time. Replacing it is a quick, inexpensive Saturday project.
- Weatherstripping: Add weatherstripping to the sides and top of the door frame to create a snug "envelope" for your space.
The "Warm Garage" Battle Plan
| Strategy | Effort Level | Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Close the Door! | Zero | High (Don't let the heat out!) |
| Weatherstripping | Low | Medium (Stops the chilly breeze) |
| Rug or Floor Mats | Low | Medium (Saves your feet from cold concrete) |
| Insulation Kits | Medium | High (Total game-changer) |
| Space Heater | Low | High (Instant warmth—use safely!) |
Treat Your Feet to Floor Coverings
Concrete is a thermal sponge—it sucks the heat right out of your body! If you're working in the garage, your feet are the first things to get cold.
- Interlocking Foam Mats: These are fantastic for workshops or gym areas. They provide a layer of insulation between you and the slab.
- Outdoor Rugs: Even an old scrap of carpet or an inexpensive outdoor rug can help keep the "chill" from rising up through your shoes.
Choose Your Heat Source Wisely
If you’re spending a lot of time out there, a small heater can be a lifesaver. Just remember: safety first!
- Infrared Heaters: These are great because they heat objects (like you and your workbench) rather than just the air, which can easily escape.
- Forced Air Heaters: These work fast to warm up the whole room, but make sure you have enough clearance from any flammable storage.
Eid-Co Wisdom: "Remember, because Eid-Co builds with Superior Air Tight Construction, your garage is already off to a better start than most! A few small tweaks can turn it into the ultimate year-round bonus room."
The "Golden Rule": Keep the Big Door Closed!
It sounds simple, but we’ve all been guilty of leaving the garage door open while we run inside for "just a second." In the winter, that second is all it takes for your warmed-up air to vanish. Train the family to hit that button as soon as they pull in!
Ready for a Cozier Winter?
A warm garage means a happier car, a more productive hobby space, and a more energy-efficient home. We hope these tips help you get the most out of every square foot of your Eid-Co home this season!
