How to Wash Bath Mats the Right Way

Everyone needs bathmats. Bathmats help prevent you from slipping and injuring yourself and they also help to keep your floors clean and dry. Because bathmats are designed to absorb water, they are prone to developing mildew, mold, and other bacteria. Which is exactly why you should be washing your bathmats on a regular basis. Generally, every week is a good washing schedule, but if your bathrooms get such frequent use that your mats do not dry fully in between uses, washing them twice a week is ideal. Here are two of the best methods to use in order to keep your bathmats fresh and clean.

Washing Machine Method

Most bathmats are machine washable, and this is the easiest way to clean them. But of course, it is always wise to check the care instructions before you get started.

If your mats are machine washable, prepare them for their cycle by shaking them free of debris first. Next, apply a stain remover to any spots that need it. Place the bathmats in the washing machine and run the cycle with cold water. Some bathmats can be dried on a low tumble dry setting, but because most mats have a rubber non-slip backing, it's ideal to allow them to air dry on a drying rack.

Hand Washing Method

If your bathmat is made from a delicate material or you wish to preserve the colors better, washing it by hand is best.

The preparation steps remain the same regardless of method, so shake off the debris and apply a stain remover if needed. Next, fill your bathtub up with warm water and drop in a few drops of laundry detergent. Submerge the mat fully in the water and allow it to become completely saturated. Gently rub the fabric together with your hands. Once you have worked the detergent into the entire surface of the mat, rinse with cold water. Drain the water from the tub and wring out as much excess water from the mat as possible. Hang it to dry.

And that’s all there is to it! Two methods for effectively cleaning your bathmats. Use this knowledge to keep your bathmats smelling and looking fresh.
