Cost Effective Ways to Keep Your Home Warm
As the weather continues to cool off, you may notice that the air inside your house is getting a bit chilly too. Having a properly insulated home will keep you comfortable and keep your heating bills down. And it does not have to cost a fortune to insulate your home either. Here are some cost-effective ways that you can keep your home warm this season.
Caulking
Drafty windows are a major contributing factor to a chilly home. A tube of caulk will only run you a few dollars at the home improvement store, but it can make a big difference in how your home feels. Go around all your windows and search for missing caulk and gaps. You can confirm your suspicions by holding a lighter near the gap. If wind interacts with the flame, you know you have got a draft. Once you have found a troubled spot, fill the gap with a new bead of caulk.
Storm Door
Storm doors offer multiple layers of protection for your home. For one, they protect your main doors from harsh rain, sleet, snow, and ice. And secondly, they add another layer of insulation. By blocking cold winds from making contact with your main door, there is less opportunity for frigid temps to seep into your home. A storm door may run you a few hundred dollars, but they do not need to be replaced often and are quite sturdy. So, the investment can be well justified.
Extra Insulation
A lot of heat escapes through the roof of your home, and the insulation in attics are often criminally neglected. For a few bucks you can pick up a few rolls of insulation. Pack some sheets into the frame of your attic and your attached garage to make sure that your warm air stays inside.
Bubble Wrap
Windows can also let out a lot of heat just by being old. Older windows are usually single pane. Single pane windows are notorious for not halting outside temperatures from coming into your house. Investing in new energy efficient windows, however, can be very costly. A budget friendly temporary solution is bubble wrap. Covering your windows in bubble wrap will insulate your windows while still allowing light to shine through.
