How to Prevent Slipping on Your Driveway This Winter

Stationed in Fargo, ND, the Eid-Co Homes team is certainly well acquainted with snow. In the right light, we can definitely appreciate the seemingly diamond-like glisten from a fresh blanket of snow. While flurries can feel magical, they can pose a problem when accompanied by freezing temperatures.

That is why we are keen to share with you just a few ways you can keep your walkways ice and accident free this Winter. Here’s how:

Shovel

Depending on where you live, you may not have long periods in-between fresh batches of snow. In order to prevent snow from becoming hard and compacted, and therefore slippery on your driveway, be sure to shovel snow from walkways. Ideally as soon as it stops snowing.

Winter can be accompanied by bitter cold temperatures at times. If that is the case in your area, no doubt you aim to be out in the cold as briefly as possible. A solution worth considering may be investing in a snow blower. Snow blowers can help save your back as well as time.

Deice

If ice is already present or forming, the aid of a de-icing agent will surely be of help. There are many on the market, so be sure to choose the one that works best for you.

Deicers that include sodium chloride are cheap and effective but can harm nearby vegetation and water supplies. Salt-free deicers may run you a bit more cost wise but are effective at extremely frigid temperatures and are less harmful to the surrounding environment. If you are an avid DIYer, you can even make your own eco-friendly deicer by enlisting ingredients such as, beet juice, pickle brine, or cheese brine.

To add traction to your driveway and walkways, sprinkling some household items on the pavement can also help. Things like, coffee grounds, salt, or small rocks can all help reduce the slipperiness.

Besides shoveling and deicing, be sure to wear shoes with good grip on icy days and do the penguin walk (take short, flat steps) to ensure you have no accidents this Winter season.
